The Word of God is the Measuring Stick with which to Measure Potential Truth
We begin our studies by looking in the scriptures for what God has said about the subject we are learning. Doctrines are the "why" of everything we do. We must understand doctrine in order to not be "swayed about" by the information that comes our way.
Scriptures:
2 Timothy 3:15-17
2 Nephi 9:28-29
Doctrine & Covenants 11:22,24
Bible Dictionary: Education
Application:
- Scripture: You may ask them to begin their studies by studying a scripture or scripture story that relates to the lesson.
- Doctrines: Understand the doctrines you are teaching and bring them out in the discussion. (The Church of Jesus Chirst of Latter-Day saints is encouraging families to study 9 basic doctrines.)
- Word Studies are very helpful. For example, if you are studying the civil war, you may begin with a word study about bondage or freedom. Or if you are studying a person like George Washington Carver, you may start with a word study about diligence or perseverance.
- Timelines may help them see where the story fits into God's plan
- Teaching the 4-R method helps them test truth against the word of God.
- Keep a record of your studies in some way - a tome or a Vanguard binder or notebook, for example.
